1. Recognising manual tasks that may involve risk to self or others

2. Identifying risk factors that make the manual task hazardous

3. Determining the nature and extent of the risk

4. Following organisation procedures for controlling hazardous manual tasks

5. Preparing workplace layout and environment according to organisation procedures

6. Organising task and workflow appropriately

7. Preparing and packaging loads for movement, taking account of specific requirements for different materials and organisation procedures

8. Selecting and using personal protective equipment appropriate to the task

9. Ensuring task is within personal capabilities

10. Use appropriate posture and handling techniques to reduce muscle load on exertion

11. Selecting, adjusting and using mechanical aids and handling devices according to manufacturer’s instructions

12. Pacing and scheduling tasks according to procedures

13. Identifying hazardous manual tasks and reporting to supervisor according to organisation procedures

14. Following organisation procedures for reporting symptoms of injury or actual injury to self and others
